The Rev. W. Jarrett Kerbel

The Psychology of Change - Adult Forum on May 20

Led by Joanne B. Conway, this will be an opportunity for people to explore a model of change that she has created that helps to understand what happens as we either move through or try to change. Joanne hopes to use the change that our community has undergone as a way to illustrate the model. She will talk about the opportunity that change brings, characteristics and skills that help one manage change, and what resistance to change is all about.  She will look at both self-initiated change and change that happened to us that is out of our control.

Summer Children’s Chapel

On Pentecost, May 27, we begin our summer service schedule with services at 8:00 and 10:00 a.m.  Children’s Chapel will take place in the Mary Chapel during the 10:00a.m. service with children departing at the Gospel and returning to the service at the peace.

HIPAA Reminder - Please Call the Clergy!

The clergy of the parish want to remind all of our members to please let us know when you or someone you love is in the hospital.  We are eager and willing to visit anyone who is ailing or dying at any hour of the day.  If you call after hours you will find our cell numbers on our voicemail.  Many people think that hospitals will notify the church when you are admitted.  Since the passage of HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), medical facilities are no longer allowed to release personal information to clergy.  Please do not hesitate to call us!

Lend Your Input to Next Season’s Biblical Studies

On Saturday, June 2, from 10:00 to 11:30, our rector, Jarrett, will lead a conversation to build a strong foundation of Biblical Studies in the Congregation. “What “and “When”; “How”, and “Who”, are questions that will guide us.   If you have had little or no experience reading books of the Bible, you are especially asked to attend.  If you have been part of classes in the past, or have participated in studies beyond the congregation, you are invited.  All suggestions and possibilities are welcome. Do come, Saturday, June 2 at 10:00 in the Parish Hall.  Coffee/tea and breakfast breads will be ready.

Seeking Photos of Scott O’Brien

Lallie Lloyd is seeking photos of former Rector Scott O’Brien in his clericals or vestments, leading worship, leading forum, or in other settings.  Pictures can be delivered to the church office care of the Rector.

Confirmation at St. Martin’s

Confirmation is the adult affirmation of faith in Jesus Christ by people who were baptized as infants.  When I meet with candidates for confirmation, I like to joke that they were made Christians without their consent when they were baptized.  Confirmation is when they consent to God’s gift of grace they received in baptism.  When a person is confirmed they are declaring to the Church that they are disciples of Christ, they want to be recognized as such and they desire the prayers and support of the community.  Because confirmation is an adult affirmation of faith, I ask candidates of all ages to take the initiative in requesting preparation for confirmation.  Preparation begins with a meeting between the candidate and the Rector to determine whether this is the right time for confirmation.  If all parties agree then the candidate and the Rector schedule a series of tutorial sessions – usually five sessions – and choose from a variety of books to read.  Church attendance is highly encouraged, especially during Holy Week, as part of the process toward confirmation.  The Rector and other parish clergy are willing to work with candidates one-to-one or in small groups up to three people at a time.  The confirmation ceremony is held at St. Martin’s if a Bishop is visiting at the right time or at the Cathedral on Ascension Day.  If you want more information about confirmation please talk to the Rector or any parish clergy.

Rector’s Consultation on Children, Youth, and Family Formation

Join Jarrett and Callie to discuss the following question: what do we want our children to know about their faith by the time they leave St. Martin’s after high school? The final Consultation will be held after SUPPER on Wednesday, May 23rd at 7pm. Please plan to be at this gathering if you have children, teach children, or are passionate about formation for our children and youth. Lend your voice to this conversation to help provide our children with rich spiritual nourishment. This listening session will help us guide and develop our programming for children, youth, and families.

POWER Postcard Blitz - Deadline Extended!

Update 5.17.12
This Sunday, May 20, is the last day to get your POWER post cards in. Please write “O’Brien” in the address line, because St. Martin’s postcards are all going to Councilman O’Brien. Sign your name at the bottom whether you live in the city or not. The airport belongs to all of us. Other churches have been assigned all the other Council members to get all of them to attend a POWER Economic Justice Forum. The Northwest Forum is June 18, 7 PM at St. Raymond’s, 1350 Vernon Rd. Carol Duncan will be available at all services this Sunday to hand out and receive your cards. For information contact Carol at 215-839-0253 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Update 5/11/12:
The deadline to collect post cards has been extended for one week to May 21. Please bring back your signed post cards. Our cards will encourage Dennis O’Brien, City Council Member At Large, to attend the Economic Justice Forum Monday, June 18 at 7 p.m. at St. Raymond’s Catholic Church, 1350 Vernon Road. You are invited to attend. We will car pool. Contact Carol Duncan at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) with questions.

St. Martin’s is a member of Philadelphians Organized to Witness, Empower and Rebuild (POWER).  POWER is calling on city leaders to establish a Jobs Plan to move low-income and unemployed Philadelphians into living-wage jobs in city-subsidized projects. Neighborhood-based training and hiring systems can be the path to jobs. POWER has organized a postcard blitz to educate City Council. They printed the cards for us. The cards are set out in baskets on the Parish House hall table, in the Houston room, and at the back of the church on two Sundays, 5/6 and 5/12. Return the signed cards to church by May 13 at noon in the basket labeled ‘Return Here’. We do not need to address or mail the post cards. Write ‘O’Brien’ in the blank at the beginning. Have friends and neighbors sign their card at the bottom. They will be hand delivered to the Councilman at his office on Monday afternoon, May 13. The Outreach Committee is hoping for 400 cards. The number we deliver is more important than the message. He will understand we want him (and you) to come to the POWER event June 18 as it says in When and Where.
Thank you for your help in this vital economic justice work. Let me know if you would like more information 215-839-0253. Carol Duncan, Deacon

Scholarships for Guatemalan Children

For 14 years St. Martin’s parishioners have generously given scholarships to children in our Companion Parish of San Juan Apostol in Chichicastenango. For our 15th year we are hoping to give up to 21 scholarships of $525 to children in Guatemala. Beginning on Sunday May 20 through June members of St. Martin’s Companion Parish Committee will be accepting your pledges or donations for scholarships of $525 and PARTIAL scholarships in any increment of $25 for the next school year. The cost continues to increase, not only due to inflation, but also because through our continued support more children are advancing to higher grades with higher costs. While parents value education for their children, many cannot afford it. There is no free education in Guatemala and many families do not have the resources to pay for school fees, books and lunches - cooked by a few mothers at the school. If children are not in school, they may work with their parents to supplement the family income. The parents are willing to sacrifice this extra income if school becomes possible. Please help us to enable these families to enable their children to have an education.

Parish Picnic

We will celebrate the close of the program year with a parish picnic on June 10 after the 10 a.m. Eucharist.  Folks can sign up in the Parish House to bring salads, sides and desserts.  We will have hamburgers, veggie burgers, and hot dogs on the grill.  You can also sign up to set up, to grill, and to clean up.  Weather permitting, we will picnic on the lawn behind Hilary House and have the Acolyte Olympics on the Willow Grove Lawn.  Acolyte Olympics is a series of silly games for acolytes and the choristers (if they dare challenge the acolytes!).

Food Request for Bill Hixon’s Funeral

Can you contribute a sweet or savory for the reception following Bill Hixon’s funeral on May 19?
The Church of the Redeemer is hosting and has invited St. Martin’s parishioners to bring a dessert or hors d’oeuvre.  If you can help, please deliver your contribution on a serving plate (put your name on the bottom if you are not using a disposable). The Parish House where the reception is being held is located on the far side of the parking lot from the sanctuary so you should allow 5-10 minutes before the service to deliver the food. As you enter the Redeemer property, pass the church on the right and look for the sign on the left pointing to the Parish House on the left side of the parking lot. Once inside, go up the stairs. The kitchen (where you will be delivering the food) is located at the end of the hall. Please contact Mary Herring (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or 215-247-6117) as soon as possible to let us know what you plan to bring.

Summer Music Offerings

Do you have an instrumental or vocal talent which you’d like to share with our church?  Please sign up to provide music for one of the 10:00am masses during the summer months.  The sign-up sheet can be found in the parish hall entryway, on the table to the left.  Questions, or to sign up by phone/email: contact Erik Meyer at 215.247.7466 x104 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Thank you, Bob!

Many thanks to Bob Previdi for helping us get our new directional signs installed on Germantown Avenue and Allen’s Lane.  You can find the classic white and blue “Episcopal Church Welcomes You” signs at the intersection of Allen’s Lane and McCallum Street and on Germantown Avenue between Springfield and Willow Grove, on your left as you drive up the hill.

Philadelphia Singers Fundraiser at Druim Moir

In recent decades, an informal but notable relationship has developed between the St. Martin’s choirs and The Philadelphia Singers. Currently, eight members of our choirs, both volunteers and staff singers, also sing in the chamber and/or symphonic ensembles of The Philadelphia Singers, believed to be the broadest such connection between the Singers and a church. This cross-fertilization enriches both organizations, providing additional performing/learning experiences, and employment for the professional singers (singing is work!).

On Saturday, June 2, The Philadelphia Singers will hold a benefit, “Summer Serenade,” at Druim Moir, the 1886 mansion of Henry Houston just down the street from St. Martin’s. Houston was also the builder of St. Martin’s. As many parishioners know, Sally Smith, a great-granddaughter of Houston, was developer of Druim Moir’s c. 1980 conversion, and her husband, James Kise, was the architect. They were the first occupants of the principal residence in the reconfigured mansion.

For information on attending the fundraiser, go to www.PhiladelphiaSingers.org, or call the Philadelphia Singers office at 215-751-9494. You might also speak to Michael Martin Mills, St. Martin’s chorister and volunteer member of the Singers symphonic chorus. He and choir member Ann Hozack are co-chairs of the event. Michael’s number is 215-527-7145.
