From this city and neighborhood, comes a congregation composed of 355 households, roughly 800 members as listed in the parish directory, an imperfect compilation of active and some inactive members. About 70 percent of the adults are married, and 30 percent of individuals are school-age children, providing a vibrant atmosphere on Sundays. We reside in over 35 zip codes with about half our congregation drawn from Chestnut Hill and Mount Airy, the neighborhoods immediately adjacent to St. Martin’s.
As a congregation, we seek to embrace our diversity, welcome visitors and recognize the distinctive gifts of each individual.
Approximately 5 percent of our congregation is non-Caucasian, many of whom actively serve in the parish. Two percent of individuals are openly gay adults, most of them in committed relationships. About 2 percent live with physical or mental disabilities. The average number of years attending St. Martin’s is 23, with about 20 percent attending for 10 years or less. Our paths to St. Martin’s are varied. While some congregants are “cradle Episcopalians,” many have come to the church from other faith traditions including, but not limited to, Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, Jewish, and nonbelievers. As a congregation, we seek to embrace this diversity, welcoming visitors and recognizing the distinctive gifts of each individual.
