A dive into the ocean is just such a great experience. You just feel a refreshness all over your body.

Susan Davis

As a working mother with two young children, Susan Davis appreciates the change of pace that comes with summer.

The school year is always very busy with two small children in elementary school. And the activities and sports are all fun and very enjoyable, but it’s a real challenge on your schedule and with the work schedule as well. We really look forward to the summer as a time when we can all slow down a little bit.

Sarah’s been swimming, which is a lot of fun, on the country club team and my son is playing golf and going to camp. It’s been a very very fun summer. And we watch the Phillies—just a more relaxed environment, which does help you think a little bit more about your relationships with people. It’s not so structured. Little opportunities present themselves in different places to experience God, if it’s just a friendship or even eating breakfast outside; we eat a lot of meals outside. Or hearing the birds sing.

One of my favorite things about summer is spending our vacation at the New Jersey shore. The ocean, for me, has always been an extremely powerful and, for me, a spiritual place to be.

Just the vastness of the sea; sometimes it can be angry and sometimes very peaceful. It is just, for me, a place where I can let stress fall off my shoulders and walk along the beach and really think about my relationship with God and my children, my family. Who I am as a person? What am I doing? Am I making good choices? … just feeling my inner spirit coming out a little bit more in those places where you’re relaxed and you’re not running from appointment to appointment or trying to catch a train. I’ve been known to run down Market Street many many afternoons to try to catch that train to pick up the children from school. So those opportunities that I experience over the summer are very important.

The water, also. There are many many references in the Scripture about water. I find that even just a plunge into the pool feels refreshing and wonderful and cleansing. The same thing—a dive into the ocean is just such a great experience. You just feel a refreshness all over your body.
